Segway® Personal Transporters (PTs) arrived in Hawaii well before they became an attraction at Botanical World Adventures. The first tours in Hawaii started when Alan Rice started Segway of Hawaii in Honolulu in 2005. Shortly after World Botanical Gardens, Inc, (WBGI) finished construction of Zip Isle Zip Line Adventures in late 2009, visits to Segway of Hawaii by several WBGI shareholders and board members led to discussions at the Board of Directors level about adding Segway PT tours as an adventure. In 2010, WBGI staff went on tours Segway of Hawaii conducts to Diamond Head and along Waikiki Beach. These first-hand experiences let WBGI personnel imagine how wonderful Segway PTs would be as an attraction in the gardens and rainforest.
The Board of Directors of World Botanical Gardens, Inc. began planning to add a Segway PT adventure in September of 2010. Shortly thereafter Segway PTs arrived at World Botanical Gardens and Waterfalls to test their feasibility in the gardens and rainforest. Glides by staff, executives, board members and officers of the corporation were taken with thrill and enthusiasm. These glide rides sealed the decision to proceed with plans.
The Board of Directors approved the project in January of 2011. Construction commenced in June 2011 with trails and bridges quickly completed. Segway PT Off Road at Botanical World officially opened for its first tours at the beginning of August 2011.
The addition of this new adventure caused World Botanical Gardens, Inc. to rethink our identify. As of July 2011, WBGI began operating as Botanical World Adventures with a growing list of attractions. Segway PT Off Road Adventure opened to the public on August 5, 2011.
The World Botanical Gardens and Waterfalls portion of Botanical World has been open since July 4, 1995 as a holiday destination on the Big Island of Hawaii. We exhibit one of the largest collections of plants in the state with thousands of species planted throughout the hundreds of acres of available gardens, waterfalls and rainforest.
The gardens includes the previously concealed waterfalls now known as Kamaee Falls and Hanapueo Falls. The falls are acclaimed by many visitors to be the most pristine waterfalls in the state of Hawaii. Many other smaller waterfalls are also available for viewing on our property. In addition to the waterfalls the Rainforest Walk is arguably the most peaceful place in the Gardens.
Botanical World Adventures also includes Zip Isle Zip Line Adventures, another way to view the beauties of the gardens and rain forest from above. BWA is continually adding new plants to the gardens and looking for new adventures for our guests.
